Working Out Together
We focus on classes where everyone supports and encourages each other.
Because we believe you deserve the best we bring you the world’s best – Les Mills classes.
Why do We Love Group Fitness?
- Your workout is supervised by a trained professional so you are guided through correct technique from warm up to cool down and everything in between.
- Because the instructor is focused on your workout they can encourage you to push yourself in places or pull back and try a different option when you need it.
- You can’t procrastinate and say “I’ll go a bit later”. It’s at the class time or you miss out you are more inclined to stick with your exercise regime and workout more often getting you to your goals quicker.
- You can’t help but get to know other people in your regular class so it quickly becomes a workout with friends. It is a social event, not just a workout.
- Doing the same workout for 4-6 weeks gets boring for most people. Not so with classes. Our instructors change things up each week and in some cases each class. Different moves, different music.
- Variety is the spice of life.
The Les Mills Connection
Les Mills was a New Zealand athlete who competed in the shotput and discus, achieving gold, silver and bronze medals at the commonwealth games in 1966 and 1970. Les and his wife opened a gym and by the 1980s group fitness was born through Jazzercize classes.
At this point Les’ son, Phillip Mills took over and together with other family members has built the business to the point where Les Mills in Victoria St is like a Mecca to thousands of instructors around the world. The Les Mills brand of classes is now found in nearly 100 countries around the world with millions of people enjoying the experience of a Les Mills workout out every day.
Les Mills classes held at Fitness Matakana include BodyPump, BodyBalance, BodyCombat, Core and RPM.

- World leaders in the fitness industry develop the programs using the latest in training techniques.
- All classes are fully choreographed by Les Mills so no matter where you are in the world you can be sure of the quality of the workout.
- Instructors are trained by Les Mills Master Trainers and are certified by Les Mills. This certification is reviewed every two years to ensure standards are maintained.
- To ensure the quality of the classes only instructors certified by Les Mills can teach Les Mills classes and Les Mills classes can only be held in Les Mills approved studios/gyms.
Fitness Matakana Classes
Body Balance
Body Balance is a unique blend of Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi exercises to build flexibility and develop core muscle strength.
Controlled breathing, concentration and a carefully structured series of stretches and postural moves to music create a workout that brings the body into a state of harmony.
It’s the best programme to provide recovery to your body.
BodyPump
BodyPump is the fastest way to tone and condition muscles.
This is the ultimate barbell class that guarantees results – you choose the intensity in choosing your weights.
One class equals 3 to 4 weight training sessions and calories are still burning 3 hours after your workout!
As verified by Auckland University, Body Pump provides the fastest body fat loss of any fitness class.
Body Combat
A fiercely energetic program inspired by Martial Arts and draws on disciplines from Karate, Taekwondo, Boxing and Muay Thai.
This is a non-contact class.
Fight your way to fitness and unleash yourself in this incredible calorie consuming class!
RPM
A cycling workout that delivers maximum results with minimum impact on your joints.
Tune in to some great music and get your pedals spinning as your instructor takes you on a journey of hill climbs, sprints and flat riding. You control your own resistance levels and speed so you can build up your fitness level over time.
Bookings for RPM classes can be made by text: 021 211 2118 or by Email with the day/date, time and name.
Shapes
A 45 min class using elements of Pilates, Barre and Power Yoga to create a low impact, high intensity class.
At the heart of the class is Pilates, building strength, mobility and alignment with low impact movements. Barre brings the beautiful intense burn. And then Power Yoga provides the more athletic movements that creates tone and condition in a calm but invigorating way.
CORE
Exercising muscles around the core, Les Mills CORE provides the vital ingredient for a stronger body.
A stronger core makes you better at all things you do, from everyday life to your favorite sports – it’s the glue that holds everything together.
During the 30-minute workout you work with resistance tubes and weight plates, as well as body weight exercises like crunches, and hovers.
We combine CORE with 30 minutes of BodyPump to tone and tighten the whole body.
Circuit
Call it Circuit. Call it Bootcamp. Ultimately it is a high intensity, fast-paced, calorie-blasting workout, using interval training and drills.
Think “Last chance workout”.
Circuit training is geared toward all fitness levels. Using short intervals of back to back resistance (weights), core (abdominal) and cardio exercises we keep your heart rate up burning calories. This is a total body fitness workout.
Pilates & Swissball Pilates
Working at your own pace to create a strong core and body awareness.
Both classes use deliberate breathing patterns and controlled exercises to increase muscle awareness, control and balance. The Swissball Pilates uses the big ball to change the intensity of the exercise.
Senior Circuit
Great for keeping your body moving and having fun at the same time.
The class is specifically designed for our older generation and those with medical issues that inhibit movement or limit intense exercise. Enjoy a little bit of mobilisation, balance, functional movements, light weights, and plenty of options. With cool 50s, 60s and 70 music there is even an opportunity to get your groove on. And always fun and new friends.
